Andrea King's appearance in the smash
Broadway hit "Boy
Meets Girl" was brief. She had met with the legendary director George Abbott
while she was still appearing in "Fly
Away Home," and he had remembered her impressive performance as Buff Masters
in that play. But after it closed, 16-year-old Georgette McKee (Andrea) left New York
right away to visit her grandmother in Palm Beach for an extended vacation. Mr. Abbott's office tracked her down in
Florida and offered her the small part of a nurse in "Boy Meets Girl,"
while understudying Abbott regular Joyce Arling, who had signed on as the female lead.
Georgette was terribly flattered that Mr. Abbott had gone to such great lengths
to locate her, and she thought nothing of the fact that she was several years too young to step into
this leading part--a fact that also had been clearly missed by Mr. Abbott when he had
previously met with her--and she happily joined the new hit production. Several
months into
the run, an understudy rehearsal was called. Mr. Abbott was organizing a touring company,
with the idea of using his Broadway understudies for the play's touring leads. One look at
Georgette during this rehearsal revealed his casting error, and immediately
afterwards he asked Garson
Kanin (for reasons unknown), who was also a member of the cast, to notify Georgette of her
release from the production. It was a blow to our young actress, but an understandable
one. And like the trooper she was, she picked up the pieces and moved on.
